You have some options when you need to get a document notarized. Because most people don’t need a notary on a regular basis, you might not know where to start when you’re informed that you must get your signature notarized.
Hire Me for Prompt Mobile Notary Service
Before going through all of the ways to find a notary near me, I’ll explain my service. I’m a mobile notary and loan signing agent based in Battle Creek, Michigan. You can call me and make an appointment for me to come to your home, workplace, hospital room, or public location. A travel fee obviously applies, but mobile notary is the most convenient and flexible option for getting your documents notarized.

You will speak to me personally, and I will be the person entering your home. I pass a background check every year.
Retail Notaries
A retail notary operates in a storefront or office. PakMail and UPS Store locations have notaries on staff. You can walk into these locations during their business hours and meet with a notary. You will pay $10 for each signature notarized. The State of Michigan allows notaries to charge $10 for each notarization.
Retail notaries are a useful option, but not always the best because:
- You have to drive there yourself.
- You have to stand in line, and these stores can be quite busy.
- There’s no privacy.
- No evening hours.
Bank Notaries
Banks have traditionally offered free notary services to their account holders. This is often a good option, but problems are certainly possible.
Here’s why:
- The bank notary may be out sick or at lunch. (I’ve had this happen.)
- Bank notary service is only available during business hours.
- Banks can have policies that limit what they will notarize. For example, one of my customers could not get his real estate seller documents notarized because his bank did not notarize outside real estate transactions.
- Bank notaries sometimes lack training. I had a bank notary decline to notarize my DBA statement for Calhoun County because he did not understand how to fill out the notary form. True story.
Nationwide Mobile Notary Companies
If you do an internet search for mobile notary near me, you’ll likely get search results from numerous companies that provide mobile notary services everywhere. These companies also go by the term signing services.
Most of them do a good job, but they function mostly as dispatchers. No company can have a notary on staff everywhere, so they hire local contractors, like me.
I accept one-time contracts from these national companies all of the time. They can be convenient for you, as the customer, but there could be some issues.
You should know that you will pay more by going through a “dispatcher” service than if you hired me or another notary in your location directly.
The reason for this is that the national company needs to make money, so they take part of what you pay and offer part of the fee to the local notary.
So, if you’re quoted $150 for the job, the notary who actually does the work may receive somewhere between $50 to $100. You essentially pay more by using a middleman because that’s how intermediary services make a profit.
And if the company you chose low-balls local notaries, you’ll have delays in getting your job scheduled because local contractors won’t be interested in the job.
I see this all the time. A low-ball offer makes the rounds on the job text messages that go out to local notaries. No one accepts. As the requested appointment time approaches, more texts appear offering a little more money, but it could be too late. The requested time passes, and the customer keeps waiting.
Obviously some companies do a better job than others in hiring a local contractor in a timely manner. Check reviews before selecting a mobile notary dispatcher company. Companies that offer fair prices to the contractors will get their jobs scheduled on time.
